The Enemy – Satan
• Some people do not believe in the existence of a personal Devil, calling “him” a medieval invention designed to scare people into the Church.
• Others imagine the Devil to be dressed in a red suit complete with horns, cloven feet, and a long dragon’s tail – standing in Hell, tormenting folks with his pitchfork.
Both these versions of Satan are false!
The Devil is No Joke! He’s real, and he is danger. In this lesson, we will learn what the Bible teaches concerning Satan.
1. Does Satan Exist?
A. Seven Old Testament Books and 19 New Testament Books refer to the existence of Satan.
B. Look up: Matthew 4:1-11
Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Satan was very real in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ:
• List the three names used of Satan in this passage:
o Devil
o Tempter
o Satan
• How many times did Satan tempt the Lord? Three (3)
• How did the Lord Jesus answer the Devil? “It is written.” Jesus used scripture (Ephesians 6:17… the Word [sword] of GOD).
2. The Origin of Satan.
Look up: Ezekiel 28:11-19 [the first 10 verses are a prophecy against the king of tyre, historically fulfilled by Nebuchadnezzar’s invasion and 13-year siege of tyre in 598-585 B.C. In this prophecy, we see another personage working behind the scenes influencing the wicked king of Tyre – Satan].
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the
sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee. All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.
A. Is Satan an eternal or created being?
"Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created"
B. What was Satan originally (verse 14)? anointed cherub. In Ezekiel's vision (10:1-20) they appear as living creatures supporting the throne of God. From Ezekiel's description of them (1;10; 41:18, 19), they appear to have been compound figures, unlike any real object in nature; artificial images possessing the features and properties of several animals. Two cherubim were placed on the mercy-seat of the ark; two of colossal size overshadowed it in Solomon's temple. Ezekiel (1:4-14) speaks of four; and this number of "living creatures" is mentioned in Rev. 4:6.
C. According to verse 15, what changes took place that dramatically altered Satan’s original status?
" Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
3. The Sin of Satan.
According to Ezekiel 28:17, this indescribably beautiful, intelligent, powerful, celestial being sinned through PRIDE. This account is enlarged upon in Isaiah 14.
A. Look up: Isaiah 14:12-17
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken
the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?
B. Underscore the “I will’s of Isaiah 14:13-14.
i) Satan’s original name was “son of the morning.”
ii) What was Satan’s last “I will?” – I will be like the most High.
iii) According to verse 15, Satan’s final destiny will be hell.
4. Where is Satan Now?
A. Ephesians 2:2
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
B. Revelation 12:10
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. Satan can appear before GOD to accuse believers.
C. 1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
D. Job 1:7
And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
From these scriptures, we learn Satan is alive and active in many areas. Read:
• Matthew 25:41
Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
• Revelation 20:10
And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night or ever and ever.
We learn Satan will eventually end up in the Lake of Fire but is not there yet! He will not reign in hell as king but will be tormented forever.
5. Satan’s Workings Among the Unsaved.
A. What does God call those who are lost? Look up:
i) Matthew 13:38
The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;
ii) John 8:44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
iii) Acts 13:10
And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?
iv) 1 John 3:10
In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
B. What is Satan’s major work among the lost? Look up: 2 Corinthians 4:4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. [to keep people from coming to Christ!]
6. Satan’s Workings Among Real Christians.
Look up: 1 John 4:4b
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
• Who is the one that is in you? Jesus
• Who is the one that is “in the world?” Satan
• Who is the greatest? Jesus
It is essential for you to know Satan is a powerful being. The Bible teaches that he works with a whole kingdom of darkness, made up of fallen angles that have been with him from the beginning. The Bible refers to these as “devils” (demons) and evil spirits.
Look up to learn more:
• Jude 6
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
• Matthew 12:26
And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?
• Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Note
A. Satan can still tempt me – 1 Thessalonians 3:5
For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain.
B. Satan does accuse me - Revelation 12:9-10
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Jesus Christ is our advocate: 1 John 2:1
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
C. Satan will try to hinder us in the service of the Lord - 1 Thessalonians 2:18
Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.
D. Satan will attempt to get Baptists to depart from the faith - 1 Timothy 4:1
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
E. Sometimes God will permit Satan to afflict Christians physically – but always for His glorious purpose: See:
i) Job 1:12, 2:4-7 (well known passages)
ii) 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in
infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
7. How Do I Deal With The Devil?
I few stopped here, many Christians would become discouraged. Praise God that He has made provisions for us to overcome Satan and his works!
A. Satan is a defeated foe
i) Hebrews 2:14
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
ii) John 16:11
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. (the Devil cannot be judged until Jesus died, was buried, and resurrected)
When Jesus died on the cross, He broke the power of the Devil.
B. You are on the winning side. 1 John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
C. Put on the whole armor of God especially designed by God to protect you. Ephesians 6:10-18
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
i) Undergarment - Truth
ii) Breastplate - Righteousness
iii) Shoes – Gospel of Peace
iv) Shield – Faith (ABOVE ALL)
v) Helmet - Salvation
vi) Sword of the Spirit – Word of God
D. Don’t give the devil an inch – Ephesians 4:27
Neither give place to the devil.
Give NO PLACE to the Devil.
E. Always be on alert
i) 2 Corinthians 2:11
Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.
ii) 1 Peter 5:8
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
F. Never retreat, always resist
i) James 4:7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
ii) We are to resist the Devil steadfastly in faith. 1 Peter 5:9
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
iii) Resist by using the Word of God (as Jesus did) Matthew 4: 4, 7, 10
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
iv) Matthew 16:23 (Jesus rebuking Peter for trying to keep Him from going to Jerusalem to be killed)
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
8. A Final Warning as to the Character & Works of Satan.
Don’t be fooled into thinking the Devil always appears in the form of ugliness, hideousness, vileness, and overt wickedness. Yes, he is the instigator of sin, the destroyer of lives, the wrecker of homes, the great deceiver, the liar, the Wicked One – but most times he comes across as “nice,” harmless, and benevolent.
Notice Satan’s ambitions in Isaiah 14:14
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
This teaches us that Satan imitates God. Everything that God is and has dine, the Devil imitates with a counterfeit “look-alike.”
Some examples:
A. Another Jesus – 2 Corinthians 11:4
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
B. Another Spirit – 2 Corinthians 11:4
C. Another Gospel – 2 Corinthians 11:4
D. Other Ministers – 2 Corinthians 11:13-15
For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
E. Another Word of God – 2 Corinthians 2:17
For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
In addition to those listed above, Satan has a counterfeit ministry – very similar to the Gospel ministry (parable of the wheat and tares):
Matthew 13:24-30
Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
Matthew 13:36-43
Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
• True Gospel preaching results in wheat
• Satan sows tares (a wheat look-a-like)
Satan can work miracles, too.
• Acts 8:9-11
But there was a certain man, called Simon, which beforetime in the same city used sorcery, and bewitched the people of Samaria, giving out that himself was some great one: To whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is the great power of God.
• Revelation 13:13-14
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
• 2 Thessalonians 2:8-10
And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
Satan has a counterfeit church
• God likens the church at Corinth to chaste virgin: 2 Corinthians 11:2
For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.
• The Church is called the Bride of Christ: Ephesians 5:25-27
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
• Revelation 17 refers to the great whore – the mother of all harlots. Study of this church shows it to be composed of:
o Apostate Christians
o Man-made systems
o Unsaved people
o Great wealth
How can we pick the difference?
Isaiah 8:20
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
ii) John 16:11
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. (the Devil cannot be judged until Jesus died, was buried, and resurrected)
When Jesus died on the cross, He broke the power of the Devil.
B. You are on the winning side. 1 John 4:4
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
C. Put on the whole armor of God especially designed by God to protect you. Ephesians 6:10-18
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
i) Undergarment - Truth
ii) Breastplate - Righteousness
iii) Shoes – Gospel of Peace
iv) Shield – Faith (ABOVE ALL)
v) Helmet - Salvation
vi) Sword of the Spirit – Word of God
Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;
